Neo Fung is Piotr Bockowski (1983, Poland). He has lived and worked between London and Hong Kong since 2008. Since 2009 he has worked as a body performer and art model and has worked at Goldsmiths College since 2017.

Synthetic Organs explores an idea of body-therapy that links psychopathology with physiological deformities. Recognition of the monstrous glands through TOUCH & SCREAM is the new body identity as well as an expression of an imaginary trauma.

The sound of the traumatic body of the performer Neo Fung is amplified & deformed by noise artist Richard Crow.

Synthetic organs are discharged as miscarried brood, retarded bastard problem-children, lured by aggressive rage and desperate cries of perverted cannibalism or semi-erotic tenderness of breastfeeding the ancestral parasite.

OF MIRTH AND MISERY

Mirth and Misery is a film production company born out of the desire to produce provocative ‘art-house’ films with commercial appeal.

Tom Metcalfe studied Film Directing at EICAR – the International Film School of Paris. John Rowley studied Film Production Technology at the University of Staffordshire before working as a cinematographer in film and television.

Over the past decade, they have directed and produced numerous projects together. Their last feature film – ‘The Wick. Dispatches from the Isle of Wonder’ was released through Indieflix to excellent reviews.

‘Of Mirth and Misery’ is a feature-length film, set for production in 2018. An absurdist pitch-black tragicomedy that takes a surreal, satirical swipe at society and the human condition.

A librarian is forced to embark upon a nightmarish odyssey to prove he exists when he is mistakenly declared dead by his bank.

Balthazar Bardo inhabits a surreal, Kafkaesque world in which elusive powers determine and yet simultaneously oppose him at every step. Influenced by Film Noir and German Expressionism, this monochrome purgatory is brought to life using a highly stylised aesthetic.

As well as being a vividly rendered, darkly humorous film that touches on topical issues, such as the continuing closure of our nation’s libraries, and the chronic recklessness and unchecked greed of the City’s bankers, the story also has universally applicable themes; such as the way in which our progress in life is impeded or aided by official decisions made for apparently random reasons by pen-pushers we never even meet.

This post-humorous tragedy is a highly ambitious project presented in a distinct and utterly original manner.

“The main feature of my work is meticulous attention to detail in microcosms packed with different characters and full of fertile psychological situations. I use a miniaturist approach, supported by the use of a magnifying glass to define every square inch of the painting.

Urban contexts are dismembered in a dream-like swarm of architecture, forms and social relations disrupted, provocatively juxtaposed with no apparent order. Childhood memories and paranoid nightmares are recomposed with graphite or color on canvas and paper, often through pareidolia, returning a duel between the freedom of the absurd and arbitrariness of the rule.

The masters that have most influence on my work ranging from Leonardo to The Clash, Brueghel, Dali, from Hieronymus Bosch to Dead Kennedys”.

Izzy Nakhla creates playful poetic works that run through waves of urgency, precariousness, power and language. She works across a range of media including sound, painting, sculpture and video. Her practice references the limits of inside and outside, the creaturely and the eerie, human and non-human, the body and the voice. With sonic language at the heart of her practice, her works play with imagination and expectation, with rhythm, poetry and rhyme as structures of movement and possibility. Her approach features a nod to intensity, buffoonery, tension and performance and features moments of transformation and emergence, connection and disconnection, breakdown and breakthrough.
