GERTRUD STEIN (UK) ➣ Minimal Wave / Electro Synth
Gertrud Stein came to life in 2008 as a protest project against the bossanovification of great 80s songs with a new wave version of Toni Holliday’s Schlager-pop number “Tanze Samba mit mir”.
In 2009 she made her first vinyl appearance on the very limited Hertzschnitt series with “Daytime TV/The Dread” (7”, HS 110) as well as her first CD appearance with “Plastic Spoon” and “Panik Attack” on the “Minimal Baby II” compilation (SLCD002-09). In 2010, a debut album was released on Urgence Disk Records (CD, kab 093). Since then a number of tracks appear on a regular basis on compilations and diy productions floating around in the wave-o-sphere.
Her music is a retro-futuristic declaration of love for the cold days of the analogue 80s, when two keys on the synthesizer were enough, when life and love were set against a world that could end anytime, where a distant but tangible feeling of alienation, not too dissimilar from our modern digital dystopia of disembodied connections, anonymous cities, and dispossessed futures, could yet not wholly extinguish the wild dreams of romance and hope.
These are artists who want to push you as a listener, viewer, toucher, taster. They feel the competing powers that define human and inhuman experience and press this open the audience. This is work that requires the presence of the artist and the engagement – sometimes submission – of the public. Your senses will thank you for the embrace that is DELIQUIUM.
